My gr. grandfather was MIHALY DEMETER* born Szabolcs, Hungary, approx. year of birth 1870's. Parents, siblings unknown. He married MARIA VASZICSKU* year unknown, possibly late 1890's. Little is known of her, but we suspect her origins are Romanian. Mihaly and Maria were farmers in Nyirbeltek, Szabolcs. They were Greek Orthodox. They had seven children of which we know the oldest Mihaly born March 29, 1897, a brother Louis, and the youngest Elizabeth, born 1910 approx. I do not know when or how Mihaly and Maria died. My line is through Mihaly jr. aka. Mike.  Please see bio on familytree page. Mihaly jr's spouse was JULIANNA PAPP born Dec. 22, 1897 in Encsencs, Szabolcs, Hungary. Her parents were SANDOR PAPP and ESZTER VADON, their birth, marriage, parents names unknown. They were wealthy farmers and Reformed Protestants in Encsencs. Julianna's siblings were Sandor, MARI VAJDA, and ZSUZSANNA JAKAB. Mihaly and Julianna Demeter had four children Andras aka Alec, Andrew*, born Aug. 5th, 1922, Nyirbeltek, died July 6, 1999 Toronto, Canada. Katherina born 1924, died shortly after of Diptheria, also two living sons. Mihaly and Julianna emigrated to Manitoba, Canada in 1928, eventually settling in Ontario and maintaining a winter residence in Miami, Florida, USA. Mihaly died August 17, 1973. Julianna died March 10, 1969. Buried Toronto, Canada with their son Andras.

* Vaszicsku may be the Hungarian version of the surnames Vasescu, Vascecu, Vascocu, Vosiscu, Vasiscu, or Veauscicu. I am currently researching this possibility.

*Alec ( Andras ) Demeter was born Aug. 5th, 1922 in Nyirbeltek, Szabolcs Hungary. To Mihaly and Julianna nee: Papp. He had 3 siblings, two brothers still living. Married twice both spouses still living. Alec had 3 children all still living. He emigrated to Canada age 5. His occupations included Business Owner, and Electronics Engineer. Service Clubs: Kiwanis. His hobbies included Science, Photography, Golf, and cooking. Alec my father, passed away July 6th 1999 in Toronto Canada.

*Mihaly Demeter was born March 29th 1897 in Nyirbeltek Szabolcs, Hungary. His parents were Mihaly and Maria nee: Vaszicsku. They were farmers. He married Julianna Papp on Oct. 31st 1921. They had 4 children, two still living. Andras the oldest was born 1922, Katherina died in 1924 as an infant. The family emigrated to Canada in 1928. Mihaly's occupations included Staff Seargant WWI and labourer. Mihaly also known as Mike passed away August 17th 1973 in Toronto Canada.

Grave stone of Juliana Demeter's parents, Sandor and Eszter Papp nee: Vadon and their granddaughter Sara Jakab in Encsencs, Hungary.
This is the grave of my Great Aunt Zsuzsanna Jakab nee: Papp and her family. She was the sister of my grandmother Julianna Demeter and my father's favourite aunt. I am her namesake. Zsuzsanna,and her husband are buried in Szabolcs, Hungary. Her daughter Sara is buried with her parents (see photo above). Zsuzsanna's son Karoly is buried on foreign soil according to this monument. Karoly was a casualty at the Eastern front during WWII.
